    Earth Science Field Study Program

The Earth Science Field Study Program will provide experiential learning that enables cadets to better understand some of the abstract scientific concepts presented in the classroom, achieving USMA Academic Program Goals. The value of such “hands-on” learning is exponentially greater than the learning achieved only via classroom lecture, and field courses can capitalize on it.

These AIADs will bring the classroom to life for the cadets, similar to how staff rides are used to effectively immerse military leaders in the landscape.

The Earth Science Field Study Program will encompass all earth science-related Advanced Individual Academic Development (AIAD)s. Gift funds will allow cadets to participate in two-to three-week AIADs focusing on geology, aquatic science, meteorology, and a host of other earth science topics.

The experience will offer field-based education, and introduce and reinforce disciplinary depth, critical thinking and creativity, and lifelong learning skills not easily developed in the classroom.

  • Center for the Study of Civil-Military Operations

Center for the Study of Civil-Military Operations

Civil-Military Operations (CMO) aim to build and manage relationships between military forces, government agencies, NGOs, and civilians to support U.S. military objectives. The Center for the Study of Civil-Military Operations (CSCMO) at West Point prepares cadets for CMO roles by offering classroom integration, research opportunities, symposia, and service-learning.

CSCMO promotes CMO education through four pillars: curriculum integration, research support, symposia participation, and hands-on service-learning internships. These programs connect cadets to real-world CMO environments, equipping them to engage with civilian and military organizations worldwide, ensuring readiness for complex operational challenges across diverse environments.

  • Foreign Language Teaching Enhancement Program

    Foreign Language Teaching Enhancement Program

As a pre-eminent institution for language, culture, and regional studies, USMA’s Department of English and World Languages continues to bring language and culture to Cadets through meaningful engagements and experiences in the language of study. These engagements include not only our more traditional means of immersion, such as semesters abroad, but really open the aperture for Cadets to participate in a wide array of language and culture-based learning opportunities, both at home and abroad.

FLTEs take advantage of our proximity to New York City, support cadets in academic competitions, facilitate engagement with native speakers, offer advanced research opportunities, and partner with the local community for service learning.

“The opportunity to travel for my capstone project was incredible and I will forever cherish the memories and experiences. It was incredibly meaningful to see firsthand how principles of my research factored into everyday French culture. I conducted months of research ahead of time and the opportunity to travel acted as the perfect culminating event. Discussing my extensive research with French government officials and military personnel made my experience unique and memorable.” — Maddie Miller, Class of 2020

  • Social Sciences Graduate Scholars Program

    Social Sciences Graduate Scholars Program

The Graduate Scholarship Program offers intensive mentorship of cadet graduate scholarship candidates by assisting them in synthesizing their experiences in the academic, military, physical, and character programs – as well as their other developmental experience as cadets – and in formulating and articulating visions for their future service.

The program consists of a formal course sequence and developmental experiences beyond the classroom. Cadets in the program apply for nationally-competitive scholarships ranging from the deferrable Truman Scholarship (awarded in the junior year) to the Rhodes, Marshall, Gates Cambridge, Mitchell, Rotary, East-West, and Fulbright Scholarships, each of which provides for one to two years of graduate schooling immediately following commissioning.

  • Mechanical & Aeronautical Engineering Technical Scholars Program

Mechanical & Aeronautical Engineering Technical Scholars Program

The Technical Scholars program provides information and opportunities for approximately 85 cadets per graduating class who express interest in any of the six technical scholarship opportunities: the Goldwater (an undergraduate scholarship), Hertz Foundation, National Science Foundation, and the Churchill Scholarships; additionally, the Lincoln and Draper Laboratory Fellowships.

With necessary funding, the program will support the formal, interdisciplinary Critical Scientific Reasoning course as well as provide support to cadets in developing their application products that include technical research proposals and related materials.

The Technical Scholarship program is distinct from but works in concert with the USMA Graduate Scholarships.

  • Chemical & Biological Science & Engineering Pre-Med Scholars Program

Chemical & Biological Science & Engineering Pre-Med Scholars Program

The Pre-Medical Scholars program prepares USMA graduates to serve as Army physicians in support of soldiers, military families, and wounded warriors. The program supports approximately 200 cadets each year who show interest in and the aptitude to pursue a medical degree.

Cadets participate in the annual West Point Medicine and Life Science Forum, as well as physician shadowing, clinical outreach and research, pre-medical conferences, and medical AIAD opportunities.

These experiences, in addition to the support and mentorship provided for the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) preparation, set the stage for graduates’ success in pursuing a career in military medicine.

  • Combating Terrorism Center

    Combating Terrorism Center

The Combating Terrorism Center (CTC) was established in response to the attacks of September 11, 2001, with the mission of arming current and future leaders with the intellectual tools needed to defeat and deter terrorist threats.

This internationally renowned center connects academic experts with military leaders and other government agencies to facilitate research, education, and policy analysis at both the strategic and intellectual levels. The CTC is one of the nation’s largest providers of counter-terrorism education.

The field of terrorism is constantly evolving as terrorist groups continuously adapt to the changing environment in which they operate. In order for the United States to respond to this adaptive enemy, it too must evolve.

The Center aims to continue to equip our national leaders with the tools and resources needed to face these unprecedented challenges and protect our national security.
